Farming Delivers for the South West
Farming is at the heart of the South West region, with a value which goes way beyond the £1.6 billion it contributes directly to the area's economy.
There are just over 25,000 ‘agricultural holdings’ of all shapes and sizes ranging from small family farms to sophisticated, multiple thousand acre estates and agri-enterprises.
The industry directly employs just over 60,000 people. Hundreds of thousands more derive their livelihoods from a wide variety of ancillary trades and businesses. The red meat sector alone is worth £2 billion and employs 25,000 people.
Fancy a Cornish pasty, Dorset blue cheese, and clotted cream, washed down with some cider? Come to the South West which produces more food than Scotland and twice as much as Wales.
The region is home to more cattle, calves, sheep and lambs than any other. We have 1.8 million cows, 2.9 million sheep, 500,000 pigs and nearly 20 million poultry.
